was named a candidate for the coveted Dutch Music Prize.
In May 2008, Henk Neven won the Fortis MeesPierson Award.
The jury declared "Neven has the potential to grow
into a sensational artist".
In addition to lieder and oratoria Henk Neven
has sung in many operas, performing such roles
as Marco in Gianni Schicchi (in Dresden), Don
Alfonso in Cosí fan tutte, Leporello
in Don Giovanni, Graaf Almaviva in Le nozze
di Figaro, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas, Schaunard
in La boheme (Dijon) by Puccini, Ben
in The Telephone and Mr. Gobineau in The
Medium by Menotti, Mars in Vénus et
Adonis by Desmererst (Nancy, in addition to a cd
recording under the baton of Christophe Rousset) and
Pollux in Castor et Pollux by Rameau (De Nederlandse
Opera in a staging by Pierre Audi).
He has worked with well-known ensembles
such as the Orchestra of the Beethovenhalle in Bonn,
Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, Het Brabants Orkest,
het Orkest van de Nederlandse Bachvereniging (in which
he performed the role of Christ in the Matthäus
Passion), het Rotterdams Philharmonic Orkest, het
Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, het Radio Kamer Filharmonie,
Het Vlaams Radio Orkest, L’Orchestre National
de France, L’Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio
France, Orchestre d’Opéra National de Paris,
Staatskapelle Berlin, L’ensemble Orchestral de
Paris, Les Concerts Spirituels and Les Talens Lyriques.
He has worked with conductors such as Edo de Waart,
Jaap van Zweden, Jos van Veldhoven, Jan Willem de Vriend,
Hervé Niquet, Emanuel Krivine, Kenneth Montgommery,
Joel Levi, Paulo Olmi, Armin Jordan, John Nelson, Ed
Spanjaard, Marc Soustrot and Christophe Rousset.
Henk Neven has performed in the Festival Oude
Muziek in Utrecht and the Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam.
In the ZaterdagMatinee series in the Concertgebouw,
he has sung Vanessa (Barber), Bakchantinen
(Wellesz), Jérusalem (Verdi), Flammen
(Schulhoff) and as Roucher in Andrea Chenier
(Giordani).
During the 2004/2005 season he gave recitals with cellist
Jan Bastiaan Neven and pianist Jelger Blanken as part
of the concert series 'Het Debuut' (The Debut). In the
Robeco summer series of the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam)
he performed the title role in Mozart's Don Giovanni
in addition to giving a recital in the Kleine Zaal
with pianist Hans Eijsackers. Recently Neven also performed
with this pianist in the concert series 'Jonge Nederlanders'
in the Concertgebouw.
In July 2004 he made his debut in Strauss’ Capriccio
at the Opéra National de Paris and in December
2004 he performed with Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper
Berlin Unter den Linden as Morales in Bizet’s
Carmen. He has been a guest in many opera houses
in Europe, including Le Duo de Dijon, Le Grand Théatre
de Bordeaux, L’Opéra National de Montpellier
and Het Nederlands Muziektheater. In the Notre Dame
in Paris he sung the role of Joseph in L’Enfance
du Christ by Hector Berlioz, conducted by John
Nelson.
His future opera engagements include
the roles of Pollux in Castor et Pollux (Rameau)
and Frère Léon in St. François
d’Assise (Messiaen) with De Nederlandse Opera
and Leporello in Don Giovanni (Mozart) with
L’Opéra National de Montpellier. In the
ZaterdagMatinee in the Concertgebouw he has been invited
to sing in La chute de la maison Usher (l’ami)
by Debussy and in Roméo et Juliette
(Mercutio) by Gounod. With L’Orchestre de Chambre
de Genève he will perform lieder by Schubert
in an orchestration by Webern.
